Primary Eyecare COVID-19: Introducing Telemedicine to deliver locally commissioned services – 24 March 2020

Primary Eyecare is today publishing updated guidance for participating practices on how to manage patients who access locally commissioned services, including the use of Telemedicine to deliver MECS Services.

This follows yesterday’s announcements from the College of Optometrists, the GOC and OFNC regarding the suspension of routine eye care and tighter restrictions in light of Government legislation to tackle Coronavirus/COVID-19.

Minor Eye Conditions Services (MECS) are to be delivered with the use of telemedicine (telephone and video consultations) in the first instance and only arranging face to face assessments where necessary. This will support practices to keep their staff, patients and public at large safe in the wake of the outbreak.

This guidance should be implemented by all participating optical practices and reviewed regularly as it is updated.
